Photography Merit Badge

We started the Photography merit badge at the Feb 24  meeting. At that time I handed out worksheets and blank blue merit badge applications to all participating scouts. At the March 3rd meeting additional merit badge book information was made available to all that wanted it. If you have misplaced your initial worksheet you can go to meritbadge.com and get another. Scouts need to read the material, answer the questions, turn in the worksheets and finally do the project. The project can be any topic of your choosing. Pick something that you like and start snapping away. Digital cameras make it easy to capture images and display them in a slide show.

Some scouts asked about photo software. I suggest that a beginner look at the free application available from Google. The package is called PICASA. I use it to organize and manipulate my photos. It also has the capability to upload to the Internet up to 2 GB of pictures for free. You can very easily create slide shows and even add music. Check it out. Once you get more proficient you may want to look at more sophisticated package like Adobe Photoshop.

Remember that there is a Court of Honor coming up on March 17 th. It sure would be nice to see several Photography merit badges awarded that night.

Any questions? Just give me a call.

The Rainbow Council Scout Reservation is a 680 acre preserve, located in Grundy County, approximately seven miles southeast of Morris and twenty-five miles southwest of Joliet. Permission slips will be handed out at the next troop meeting with more details…

Troop 533 Summer Camp 2010

This year Troop 533 will be going to Tamarack Scout Reservation for summer camp, which is located in Jones, Michigan. The dates are from July 11th to July 17th, 2010. The National Jamboree is going on this year so many summer camps just won’t have much of a staff during the July 26th to Aug 4th time slot and our troop will be doing high adventure from July 23rd to August 1st which means troop personnel aren’t readily available. That narrows down our choice to the week we picked.

To view Tamarack’s website go to:

www.lasallecouncilbsa.org/summercamp/index.html .

If you are a Webelos scout just moving up to boy scouts then you really don’t want to miss this exciting opportunity. There are special programs at camp tailored to teaching you many of the basic rank requirements. It is not unusual for a new scout to pick up a rank or two at their first summer camp. Now don’t think that summer camp is work. It is mainly fun activities that you get to pick and choose. All meals are included at the camp dining hall so in many ways it is a lot like home. Now that we have a location and date more details will be available. Keep your eye on the website for the latest scoop.

The cost is $210.00 per scout, the adults going will be paid for by the troop. The money needs to be in by April 28, 2010. Checks are to be made out to TROOP 533, no cash please. These checks can be given to Monica or Dan Corradin (Trevor’s parents).

Dan Corradin will be passing out health forms, all scouts and parents that go will need one filled out and signed by a physician and parent. There will be more notices to follow, but if you have questions, feel free to call Dan.

Merit Badges

This one is directed at adults.
Do you have a job? Do you have a hobby? Most of us do. There are over one hundred merit badges that I’m sure one or more would fit your particular
set of skills. The requirements are all listed at the web site meritbadge.com. Pick out one of your favorites, sign up at the council office as a merit badge
councilor and share your knowledge. It is that easy. What do you get out of it? Well for me it was having a scout from another troop, while at a council
Camporee attend a merit badge session that I headed up, return home with his very first merit badge. He was so elated that I swear his feet never
touched the ground. That incident was enough payback to me for all my scouting hours.

Tents

When a campout is over scouts are asked to take home a tent to clean it out and make sure it is very dry. Please report any damage that may have
occurred or if any parts are missing. Tents that are stored wet and dirty will develop mildew. It is important to return the tent back to the troop the very
next meeting.
